Both the girls and boys football teams braved the windy conditions at Redlands on Friday 12th October. The boys team started strongly, beating Beechcroft 2-0 with goals from Theo Dodds and Louis Mahon. They went on to beat St Mary’s and Holy Trinity, drew with Wyke Regis and lost narrowly to a strong St Osmunds team. The wait to find out who progressed to the semi-finals was tense but the boys all cheered when we heard we faced Atlantic in the semi finals.
The girls also started the tournament strongly with wins against St Mary’s, Holy Trinity, St Nicks and St George’s. They drew with an equally strong Southill team and lost narrowly to Radipole, Sophie Adams and Scarlet Paul notching up the goals between them. It was another tense wait to see if the girls team would also make it to the final. Another cheer erupted as it was announced that Conifers would play Southill in the semi final.
Atlantic Academy were a strong team, but the boys fought hard and scored an early goal. Conifers then conceded from a counter attack but the boys did not give up and, with some excellent passing in the midfield, they managed to score a later winner. The celebrations started as the girls also won their semi-final 2-1. Both boys and girls football teams in the final... a first for Conifers!
The boys final was a tense game against St George’s, there was nothing to separate the teams until St. George’s scored direct from a throw in. Conifers felt deflated but still progress to the county finals in Bournemouth at the end of November.
The girls faced Radipole in the final and were determined to win after losing to them in the earlier round. Scarlet Paul drove her team on and they dominated Radipole, with Kacey Barber managing to score the winner. Conifers girls were crowned champions and progress to the county finals in Bournemouth on 7th December.
